Sacred Boundaries

There once lived a great king who ruled over a powerful kingdom. His kingdom stretched along the coast, where the land met the vast and restless ocean.

The king had a beautiful daughter whom he loved dearly. She was his only child and as she grew into a young woman, men from near and far dreamed of marrying her, and perhaps one day, becoming king themselves.

When the princess came of age, the king issued a decree. Any man , young or old, noble or commoner, could ask for his daughter's hand in marriage. The king required no dowry, but there was one condition.

The man who wished to marry the princess had to go to the ocean and return with a pack of water as a gift for the king.

The news spread throughout the kingdom. Many thought the king's condition was absurd, even impossible. Yet no one dared to question it. They simply assumed that if the king had demanded it, there must be a way to accomplish it. After all, he was the king.

Men rushed to the ocean, one after another, trying everything they could think of. Some filled bags made of leaves and tied them tightly with ropes. Others invented complex contraptions and tried every method they could imagine. But every attempt failed. One by one, they became discouraged and gave up.

Word of the impossible challenge eventually travelled beyond the kingdom. Men came from neighbouring kingdoms and from distant lands across the continent. Princes, warriors, commoners ... they all came. Each convinced that he would succeed where the others had failed.

Some declared that the ocean was cursed. Others tried magic. Still they arrived with elaborate inventions and great confidence but no one succeeded. The water escaped.

Then one day, a young man appeared at the gates of the kingdom. Unknown to anyone, he had travelled from a distant land and carried with him a small, carefully wrapped package. Approaching the guards, he said:

"I have come to accept the king's challenge. But before I go to the ocean, I ask to be taken before His Majesty. I have brought him a precious gift from my homeland."

The guards, curious, took him to the king, who opened the package. Inside was an intricately carved wooden pipe. The king was delighted by the gift and thanked the young man warmly. The young man then asked permission to speak with him privately and the king granted his request.

"Your Majesty," the young man said, "I am honoured to give you this pipe. It has been kept in my family for generations. It belonged to my father, who passed away the year before. He would have been proud to know that this treasured object had found its way into the hands of a great king."

The king was touched. The young man continued:

"I have heard of your challenge and I consider it a commendable one. I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to attempt it and I believe the task will be very easy for me."

The king smiled at the young man's confidence.

"But I have one request before I begin," the young man said.

"What is it?" asked the king.

"You must smoke the pipe."

The king looked at him, puzzled.

"And then," the young man continued, "you must use the smoke from the pipe to make me a string."

The king raised an eyebrow.

"That string is the only thing, strong enough, to hold the pack of water I will make at the ocean," the young man explained. "Without such string, the task cannot possibly be completed."

The subjects presents in the room overheard the young man's request. At first, there was silence. Then came laughter. They laughed at the young man's audacity.

The king, however, did not laugh. He looked at the young man in silence for a long moment. He then stood and declared:

"This young man has won the challenge!"

The king turned to his daughter and gave her hand to the young man. And so, the stranger from a distant kingdom became the king's son-in-law.

One of the many stories I was told in my childhood, this story is about confidence, wisdom and most importantly, of Boundaries.

Boundaries are sacred.

They dictate respect for yourself and respect from others. As we navigate this complex world filled with complex challenges, sometimes, the wisest way to honour a challenge is to honour the boundary of what is possible.  Refusing to pretend that an impossible condition or task, is reasonable is a way to instil respect.

So I ask,

How far are you willing to bend?

How high are you willing to jump?

How much can you afford to sacrifice?

June is about protecting your energy. And that feels like the right space to grow.
